Riding in this bookmobile, a space traveler
across distances, not black or starry but
snow-blanketed with last season's corn stubble,
stands of windbreak poplar, only a leaf or two
left and stirring, backdrop for Holsteins and
bay horses in winter turnout, red-tailed hawk
gliding just ahead over 280th Street,
the truck's stores bouncing expectantly
on the shelves behind me, coming to light
today in Castle Rock Township or Vermillion,
between the long farmland tracks, the destinations
and close readers, the deepening spaces I travel.
