Rookish dawn cracks in a mineral fire
waving in the window's ice. Animals
from lost mythology begin appearing,
the pallid guardians of lore or terror:
Cerberus chewing a random wingspread,
Bucephalus rising, lopsided, over
resurrections of the dead. Beyond
the staccato tick of frozen clematis,
the gruesome lunge forward: Cloven-footed
hefty-necked nightmares slouching in crystal.
The day that surrounds this soft city
bleeds off every prism, ghost and wing
waning. I work at winterizing, tuck
the tape in corners to keep out unearthly cold.
