A long poem of nine sections written in Athens in 1943. The poem begins in Monemvasia and moves to Athens during the famine and German occupation. Like most work by Ritsos, it's rich in the everday surreal. 35 pages. 110 copies. $55.
Title page. The titling is Van Krimpen's Open Kapitalen which was cast at the press. The decapod ornament was designed by the French typographer Crous-Vidal.
Text excerpt. This is the start of the second section, 'Insufficiency.' The text is set in Joanna Italic, which was designed by Eric Gill. This face was chosen because it's so condensed and it helped to eliminate many broken lines.
